Game turns 3 and 4 are mud turns.
All movement (except Soviet rail) is reduced to one hex in each movement phase.
All attack values are halved for both sides.

German Game Turn 4

West of Moscow
The main German effort is directed at widening the wedge driven in the Soviet line at Mozhaisk. But no ground is gained this turn as all attacks get stuck in the mud. Kaluga also remains in Soviet hands as a second German attempt to take the city fails.

South of Moscow

A panzer corps has reached Tula, but without sufficient strength to attack due to the mud penalty. The Germans continue the flanking move to the east, which will force the Soviets to commit more units to this area instead of west of Moscow where the panzer spearhead is within two hexes of the Soviet capital.

Soviet Game Turn 4

Again the mud has prevented the Germans from inflicting casualties, and the Soviet army continues to grow in strength. The Soviets abandon the Mozhaisk Defense Line and evacuate Kaluga in the process of conducting a one-hex withdrawal west of Moscow. The image shows that by the end of game turn 4, a two hex deep defensive belt stands in the path of the nearest Nazi approach to the Soviet capital, and the south flank has been screened as well.
