Spring
1943 Axis turn:
The elite SS panzer army is mobilized in Berlin and rushed to Rome to stiffen Italian
resistance against the Allied advance.
Elsewhere, the Germans begin a strategic withdrawal on the eastern front, moving nearly
half their forces west. The Crimea is evacuated, and the length of the front shortened to
a line hinging on Leningrad in the north and running approximately along where the Dnepr
river would be in the south. *

Spring
1943 Allied turn:
The Soviets launch offensives in the north and south. In the north, two fronts supported
by two tank armies and artillery try to retake Leningrad but are stopped by the German
15th army and 4th panzer army. Further south, a tank battle in the Ukraine results in the
destruction of the German 6th panzer and Soviet 3rd Guards tank armies.
Elsewhere, the Allies attack two Italian armies east of Rome in an effort to isolate the
capital, but the operation bogs down in the mountainous terrain there.
