German Game Turn 1 - note that the first image shows the unit positions after the German panzer movement phase, but before combat.

West of Moscow
The yellow arrows indicate German attacks. Three Soviet armies are destroyed and one retreats, opening a shallow breach in the Soviet line. The Germans lose one 6-4 infantry corps. In the ensuing German movement phase, panzer units advance into the Vyazma Defense Line, compromising the Soviet first line of defense before Moscow.
To see the situation after the German advance, move the mouse pointer over the image at right. The larger yellow arrows show the route of advance through hexes not covered by Soviet ZOC, while the smaller arrows point to the panzer penetration into the Vyazma Defense Line.

Southwest of Moscow

The Soviet army north of Bryansk is destroyed, while the one south of Bryansk retreats. The Germans create two small punctures in the Soviet line, but do not achieve a breakthrough in this sector.

Soviet Game Turn 1

Four armies have been lost, but Soviet strength increases slightly as five replacements are received. Not needing to take any chances yet, the Soviets make no attacks, preferring to build up their strength and create a defense-in-depth to prevent any deep German breakthrough. West of Moscow, the Soviets conduct a limited one-hex withdrawal to better defensive positions. The image at right shows the overall position at the end of game turn 1.
