GAME TURN 2 - December 17, 1944

German Turn

On the northern flank, the 12th Vg Div occupies Elsenborn while the Peiper Pz Bgd passes through and advances across the Elsenborn Ridge, finding a gap in the American lines.

In the center, the 12SS Pz Div advances outside Malmedy, and the 1SS Pz Div makes contact with the US 99th Inf Div. Both panzer divisions have exceeded their movement factor and can't attack. The 116th Pz Div crosses the Our river south of St. Vith, but delays attacking until both the 62nd Vg Div and the 3rd Para Div are in position to support the attack on the town. bba2g2cy.jpg (25964 bytes)
The 2nd Pz Div crosses the Our river and encounters the US 112/28 Rgt, but awaits the arrival of the 560th Vg Div before attacking. The Lehr Pz Div crosses the Our river and joins the 26th Vg Div in an attack on Clervaux, annihilating part of the US 28th Inf Div defending the town.
Mouse over the image. The Lehr Pz Div takes Clervaux. Only a thin screen of US regiments along the Clerf river now defends the road to Bastogne.
The southern flank becomes static as two volksgrenadier divisions - the 212th and 276th - are not strong enough to risk an attack on the US 4th Inf Div in Echternach. bba2g4sy.jpg (23958 bytes)

Allied Turn

The loss of one complete US division and the mauling of two more forces the Americans into a wholesale 3 to 4 hex withdrawal in the central and southern sectors of the German offensive. The US 2nd Inf Div is sent to Spa accompanied by the US 14th recon Rgt which abandons Malmedy. The elements of the US 9th Arm Div in St. Vith evacuate that town. Three US divisions arrive from other parts of the front. The US 7th Arm Div appears at Eupen and moves two hexes south. The US 1st Inf Div heads to Houffalize, and the US 10th Arm Div is sent to Bastogne.
