GAME TURN 1 - December 16, 1944
Images show the situation after unit movement, but before combat. Yellow arrows show impending attacks.
German Turn Four leg divisions advance with the mission of protecting the northern flank of the offensive. Three volksgrenadier divisions - the 272nd, 326th, and 12th - attack the US 2nd Inf Div and force it back to the hex south of Monschau. |
||
Three hexes southeast of Monschau, the Peiper Pz Bgd advances
through a gap in the American line and takes Rocherath-Krinkelt, but has exceeded its
printed movement factor and may not participate in combat. Two SS panzer divisions - the
1SS and 12SS - attack the US 99th Inf Div which takes a loss and retreats one hex
southwest. Move your mouse pointer over the image at right. The 1SS and 12SS pursue and inflict further heavy losses. The survivors of the now decimated US 99th flee southwest. |
||
A few more hexes south, in the center sector of the
offensive, two volksgrenadier divisions (16th & 62nd) and the 116th Pz Div isolate and
attack the US 106th Inf Div, sending the Americans reeling back toward St. Vith. Half the
men of the 106th Inf Div are lost. Move your mouse pointer over the image at right. The 116th Pz Div pursues and a slaughter ensues. The US 106th Inf Div ceases to exist on the first day of the offensive. Panzers now stand just across the river from a wide open St. Vith. |
||
South of St. Vith, the 2nd Pz Div and 26th Vg Div attack across the Our river and catch half of the US 28th Inf Div on the Skyline Drive, rolling the scattered Americans back into Clervaux. The Lehr Pz Div and 5th Para Div also attempt a river crossing over the Our but are stopped by a single US regiment, the 109/28. | ||
Three leg divisions protecting the southern flank are unable to mount an attack. The 212th (4-3) Vg Div has exceeded its printed movement factor and can't participate in combat. |
Allied Turn
Monschau is evacuated, and the US 2nd and 78th infantry divisions form a new defense line
one hex west of the town. The last remnants of the US 99th Inf Div set up a temporary
delaying position outside Malmedy while the US 14th recon regiment moves into the town.
Part of the US 9th Arm Div is rushed to St. Vith and arrives before the German 116th Pz
Div can roll into the town. The elements of the US 28th Inf Div which had retreated into
Clervaux prepare to defend the town. A thin screen of five US regiments on the south flank
fall back 1 to 2 hexes intending only to delay the German advance. The US 4th Inf Div on
the southern most end of the line continues to hold Echternach.
