The AWFUL GREEN THINGS from Outer Space (SJG - 1980, 1988)

One 12" x 21" map, 137 counters, one 24-page rule booklet.

Two-player game of the invasion of the spaceship Znutar by Awful Green Things. The game continues until either all of the crew or the Green Things are exterminated, or until enough of the crew escape the ship and return safely to their home planet.
Inspired by the movie "The Green Slime".

*Note*  The presented replay is from the 1988 green pocket box edition and only uses the rules/components included with that version.

The Awful Green Things (AGTs) start the game with 4 adults, 4 babies, and 4 eggs.

Aboard the spaceship Znutar, one of the pilots walks from the crew's quarters into the corridor where he discovers a baby Awful Green Thing, but, alone and unarmed, he is unable to do anything but raise the alarm. "Leadfoot" the robot clanks from the machine shop over to the saucer bay where there is another baby AGT. Leadfoot grinds it underfoot.

The four Awful Green Thing eggs hatch into babies. Two baby AGTs converge on the Pilot in the corridor. One of them eats the Pilot and grows into an adult AGT. Elsewhere, another adult AGT enters the #2 sensor and eats the Tech, then lays an egg. Meanwhile, still another adult AGT finds the Doc and the Medic in the sick bay. The Medic sees the Doc get eaten and an egg get laid. Two more adult and one baby AGTs catch the Engineer alone in the machine shop. Moments later the Engineer is gone and there are three adult AGTs in the machine shop.

After only one Awful Green Thing turn, one of the crew is confirmed dead and three more are missing. The rest of the crew react. The Comm Officer in the #1 bridge grabs the stun pistol. The Yeoman in the #2 bridge grabs the other stun pistol. The Cook in the galley grabs a knife. The Sarge and Coxswain each grab a can of zgwortz (crew food) from the mess deck. The Medic grabs a hypodermic. The two Marines in the pool room each grab a pool stick. The Machinist in the aft machine shop grabs a fire extinguisher. Sparks and the Supply Officer head to the main cargo hold where the electric fences are. The Engineering Officer runs from the engine room to the aft machine shop. The two Marines with pool sticks hurry out into an empty corridor. The Sarge, carrying a can of zgwortz, rushes past them and stops in front of the crew's quarters. Seeing a baby AGT inside, he throws the can of zgwortz at it. Zgwortz proves to be toxic to AGTs, doing three dice to kill, but not enough of it hits the baby AGT and it survives. The Machinist also heads out into the corridor and encounters two AGTs, a baby and an adult. He turns the fire extinguisher on both AGTs, turning each of them into one die fragments. There are now ten AGT fragments in the corridor. The Yeoman checks the sick bay, and seeing an adult AGT in there, shoots it with the stun pistol, but nothing happens. Meanwhile, the Medic injects the egg with the hypodermic. The egg explodes into four fragments. Captain Yid, alone, runs into a baby AGT in the corridor but can do little damage bare-handed. Leadfoot the robot and the Ops Officer together go to the machine shop looking for the Engineer but instead find three adult AGTs. One AGT is crushed, mostly by Leadfoot. The Cook and the Comm Officer also enter the machine shop. The Cook stabs another AGT with the knife, while the Comm Officer, throwing away his useless stun pistol, punches it. The knife cuts AGTs well for three dice to kill, but the adult AGT survives it. The Pilot from the crew's quarters, the First Officer, and the Mascot discover a baby AGT in the corridor, but weaponless, they punch, peck, stomp, and kick it to death.

The 14 Awful Green Thing fragments all grow into babies. The Coxswain manages to avoid being eaten by two adult AGTs. The adult AGT in the sick bay gobbles the Medic and lays an egg. Captain Yid, still alone, is surrounded and taken down by five AGT babies and one grows into an adult. The Sarge, also alone, is swarmed over by six more baby AGTs, and one of those grows into an adult. Five more baby AGTs are all over the Machinist and he too is munched.

Over one-third of the crew are now hors d'oeuvre de combat. Sparks and the Supply Officer each grab an electric fence from the main cargo hold and head out into the corridor toward the center of the ship. The Pilot, Mascot, and First Officer go into the #1 sensor to get the communications beamer, but a baby AGT is in the way. The Engineer Officer flees the aft machine shop in the direction of #1 fuel pod. The Yeoman escapes the sick bay and goes to damage control where the gas grenades are stored. The Ops Officer and the Comm Officer also enter damage control from the next-door machine shop. The Coxswain, can of zgwortz in hand and momentarily alone with two adult AGTs, is joined by the robot, the knife wielding Cook, and one of the poolstick swinging Marines. The other Marine peels off toward #1 fuel pod. One adult AGT survives a knife and zgwortz attack by the Cook and Coxswain. The other adult AGT avoids being crushed by Leadfoot the robot, but is beaten senseless by the Marine with the five dice to stun pool stick. The Pilot, Mascot, and First Officer do away with the baby AGT in #1 sensor.

Five Awful Green Thing babies grow into adults. AGTs spread out through the center and rear areas of the ship trying to isolate and surround pockets of crew. One adult AGT, running from a poolstick swinging Marine, ducks into damage control, chomps the Comm Officer, and lays an egg. Another adult AGT runs down the Engineer Officer just outside the door of the #1 fuel pod, eats him, and lays an egg.

The Pilot in #1 sensor grabs the communications beamer, and followed by the Mascot and First Officer, move out and down the corridor until they are stopped by a single adult AGT. The Robot, Marine with poolstick, Cook, and Coxswain are in an adjacent corridor space with another adult AGT. The Marine in #1 fuel pod drops his pool stick and grabs a can of rocket fuel. The Yeoman and the Ops Officer in damage control each grab a gas grenade, then escape to the machine shop where they will be able to toss grenades back through hatches. The Supply Officer activates an electric fence in the corridor outside the wardroom. The Ops Officer tosses his grenade into the saucer bay where there is a singe adult AGT. The crew has finally found an effective area effect weapon as the gas does five dice to kill and the AGT dies. The Yeoman now throws his gas grenade back through the hatch at an AGT egg and adult in damage control. The egg dissolves but this adult AGT doesn't die. The Pilot turns the communications beamer on the single adult AGT in the corridor, while the First Officer and Mascot punch and peck at it. The beamer has no effect, but with a roll of "18" on three six-sided dice, it is the punching and pecking which bring down this AGT. The Robot, Cook, Coxswain, and poolstick twirling Marine beat, stab, punch, and crush another adult AGT. The Marine in #1 fuel pod dumps rocket fuel into the corridor, and there are now eight AGT fragments in the corridor where only one adult and egg had been.

agtcntr3.jpg (10628 bytes)

All the adult Awful Green Things lay eggs. Two adult AGTs charge into #1 fuel pod and tear the Marine apart before he can pick up his pool stick again. One egg is laid. Two more adult AGTs go after the Ops Officer and Yeoman in the machine shop and eat them both. Two more eggs are laid.

agtcntr4.jpg (10999 bytes)

More than half the crew have now gone down AGT gullets. All of the remaining crew members beat feet to damage control where the only good area effect weapon, gas grenades, are kept. An adult AGT found in there is slaughtered and it's egg smashed.

The eight Awful Green Thing fragments in the corridor outside #1 fuel pod grow into babies. One adult AGT tests the active electric fence and is sizzled for four dice to kill, but lives. AGTs throughout the ship begin to gather in areas around damage control to trap the remaining crew.

agtcntr1.jpg (10423 bytes)

Crewmen grab three gas grenades. One is thrown into the corridor, one into the machine shop, and the last into the saucer bay. All AGTs in those areas die - three adults and two eggs. Sparks activates the second electric fence in damage control.

Eight Awful Green Thing babies grow into adults. Many AGTs are massing near damage control for an all-out assault, but keep out of adjacent areas to avoid the gas.

agtcntr2.jpg (10943 bytes)

The crew, realizing there is no hope of saving the ship, and no chance to make it to the bridge to set the self destruct, and that there are only just enough crew left to abandon ship, now grab the three available gas grenades and move as a group out into the saucer bay, heading for the cockboat bay. They are only momentarily delayed by an adult AGT which is run over and trampled.

All Awful Green Thing eggs hatch into babies. Six adult and two baby AGTs burst into the saucer bay, but can only attack the Robot. Leadfoot is overwhelmed and trashed. One of the AGT babies tries to eat but shrinks to an egg.

agtcntr3.jpg (10628 bytes)

The crew escapes to the cockboat bay, evade AGTs there, pile in and launch free from the Znutar. After traveling through space for many years, the cockboat is sucked into a black hole and all hands are lost. The Awful Green Things are left infesting the Znutar.
